Automating Tagging in GoHighLevel Email Campaigns: A Game Changer for Targeted Engagement
Email marketing remains at the heart of digital communication for businesses, agencies, and marketers seeking measurable results. GoHighLevel’s latest update introduces automated tagging for email campaigns based on subscriber interactions—providing unprecedented control, clarity, and precision in how you manage follow-ups and segmentation. This major update empowers you to target, nurture, and convert leads with surgical accuracy, transforming simple broadcasts into interactive customer journeys.
What is Automated Tagging in GoHighLevel Email Campaigns?
Automated tagging is the new feature that enables users to assign tags to their contacts based on specific actions taken within an email campaign. For example, you can tag contacts who have opened, clicked, or replied to an email, or even those who have unsubscribed or whose email addresses have bounced. This functionality transforms how you analyse engagement and segment your audience, unlocking more relevant communications and laser-focused remarketing possibilities.

How Does Automated Tagging Work?
Automated tagging follows a logical and intuitive flow inside GoHighLevel’s campaign builder:
- Set up your email campaign as usual—design, write, and schedule.
- Enable “Add tags” for the campaign.
- Define conditions such as ‘opened email’, ‘clicked a link’, or ‘replied’.
- Assign relevant tags for each condition (e.g., “Webinar-Interested” or “Clicked-Link”).
- Review statistics and segment contacts automatically based on actions taken.
Previously, segmenting contacts based on their actions required time-consuming manual processes. Now, as actions occur, contacts are tagged in real-time, giving you live data to inform retargeting, nurture sequences, and reporting.
Step-by-Step: Setting Up Automated Tagging
1. Create or Select an Email Campaign:
Navigate to Marketing > Emails > Campaigns. Choose an existing campaign or create a new one.
2. Design Your Email:
Customise your email with text, images, CTAs, and links as needed using the intuitive email builder.
3. Enable Tagging:
Scroll down in campaign settings to find the ‘Add tags’ toggle. Enable it to activate automated tagging.
4. Define Conditions:
Click ‘Add conditions’ to set up rules such as:
- Contact opened the campaign
- Contact clicked any or specific link
- Contact replied to the email
- Email soft/hard bounce or unsubscribed
5. Assign or Create Tags:
Select the tag(s) you wish to apply. If the tag does not exist, create new ones in Settings > Tags before returning to campaign setup. For instance: “Opened-Webinar”, “Clicked-Replay-Link”, etc.
6. Track Clicks and Activate UTM Tracking:
Turn on ‘Track Clicks’ if you wish to enable link-specific tagging and analytics. Activating UTM tracking provides further campaign insights.
7. Test and Review:
Send a test email, interact as a recipient, and verify that tags are automatically applied based on your engagement.
This process allows for precise tagging and, consequently, more effective segmentation and automation in all your downstream marketing activities.

Who Benefits From Automated Tagging?
This feature is a game changer for agencies, marketing teams, and business owners using GoHighLevel—especially those managing launches, webinars, nurturing sequences, and regular newsletters. Key beneficiaries include:
- Digital marketing agencies seeking to automate lead nurturing and provide detailed campaign analytics to their clients.
- Businesses promoting webinars or training events, wanting to remarket specifically to engaged sign-ups.
- Ecommerce brands sending promotional broadcasts and wishing to segment buyers based on click or open rates.
- Coaches and consultants aiming to trigger personalised follow-up or reminders only to interested contacts.
- Any B2B or B2C company desiring efficient engagement tracking and sharper audience segmentation.
Example Use Case: You host a live webinar and send a follow-up with the replay link. Using automated tagging, you can:
- Tag all contacts who opened the replay email.
- Tag those who actually clicked the replay link.
- Trigger further sequences only for those who showed interest—while sparing your wider audience unnecessary emails.
This is not only more respectful to your subscribers, but it also improves your sender reputation and overall deliverability.
For agencies, this feature offers an added level of automation that can be showcased as a premium solution in your services menu.
Why This Update Matters
Email fatigue is real, and indiscriminate follow-ups often result in diminished engagement or unsubscribes. GoHighLevel’s automated tagging equips you to:
- Reduce unnecessary promotions to disinterested contacts.
- Save time by automating segmentation—no more manual list management.
- Increase ROI by targeting your most engaged contacts for promotions, reminders, or upsell sequences.
- Obtain granular campaign data for continuous optimisation and better client reporting.
- Maintain higher sender scores and compliance by respecting user preferences.

Tracking Email Performance with Confidence
The new campaign statistics dashboard within GoHighLevel shows:
- Total sent, opened, clicked
- Open and click rates (with toggle between absolute and percentage)
- Breakdown of link performance with UTM tracking
- Tags applied to each contact
This data-driven approach helps refine campaign strategy and demonstrates value both internally and to your clients.

Limitations and What’s Coming Next
Currently, tags must be pre-created in the Settings > Tags area. They are not created on the fly within the campaign builder—a small inconvenience, soon to be resolved according to GoHighLevel’s product roadmap. The upcoming enhancement will allow creating new tags directly as you build your campaign, streamlining the process even further.
GoHighLevel continues to listen to user feedback, iterating quickly to offer features that simplify yet empower your marketing strategies.
Practical Examples for Automated Tagging
Webinar Follow-up:
Automatically tag registrants who open your follow-up email or click the replay link. Trigger reminders only to those who engaged, while excluding non-responders from future promotions.
Product Launches:
Segment buyers vs. browsers, sending additional product info to those who clicked a purchase link but did not convert.
Customer Onboarding:
Track which onboarding materials were opened or clicked, and send tailored messages based on customer behaviour.

Full Video Transcript
Welcome back everyone. Tina here and in this video today, I’m going to show you how you can set up automated tagging inside email campaigns based on the interaction of your subscribers. Why would you want to do that? Well, maybe you’re running a campaign, a webinar, for example. You’re in the middle of a launch and you really want to see who actually clicked on the link and who clicked to watch your replays. For example, let’s say first you were running the webinar live, then you’re sending out the replay. If people clicked on it, then you can send dedicated emails based on that action to really remarket to these people and maybe not to the ones who didn’t even click on your webinar link in the first place because you don’t want to bother them with a promotion that is maybe not relevant to them and you just really go really hard on those who raised their hand and said, “Hey, I’m interested in watching that webinar.” So, let’s go and let’s set this up. All right, let’s click on marketing on the left, emails at the top, and then select campaigns. Click plus new campaign or just select the one that you’ve already created. So, let’s choose this one. And here we are in the email builder. Once you’ve renamed your campaign, you’ve added your text, your images, your buttons, your social media icons, and so on and so forth, you can just go ahead and click send or schedule at the top right corner. Then scroll down and right here you see the option add tags. Okay, so you just toggle this on and now that means you’ve turned on to automate adding tags to contacts depending on how they interact with your campaigns. Now furthermore, you can also add conditions. So just click the add conditions button. Here we can choose a condition. Hey the contact open the campaign. Hey the contact click the campaign. The contact replied to the campaign. Unsubscribed email hard bounce or email soft bounce. Let’s say simply we’re going to just go with open the campaign. Then we want to add a tag which says for example open campaign. You click the drop-own menu and you will add your campaign tag. Please note right now one of the limitations is you can’t create a tag right here inside of this email builder. You would have to go back down to settings bottom left and then click tags and create a tag right there. So let’s do that right now. Let’s go back. Click on settings bottom left. Look for tags. Click on tags. Click plus new tag. Top right corner. Add your tag. Let’s say tag open for example. Let’s create. Let’s create another one real quick. Let’s call it clicked instead of opened. And another one. Let’s say tag URL clicked. Let’s hit create. Let’s go back to our campaign. Click on marketing emails and campaigns. And here we go. Let’s enter this campaign. Let’s actually add some text right now and add a URL. Let’s hyperlink Google for example. Hit save. Go send and schedule. Let’s scroll back down. Turn on add tags again. Click on add conditions. Let’s choose basic campaign interaction again. Let’s choose conditions. Contact open to campaign. Let’s select a tag. Let’s select tag opened. Okay, great. If you wanted to delete it for whatever reason, you just click the delete bin icon right here. If you wanted to add one more condition, for example, the person also clicked on a specific link, just add one more condition. Choose the type basic campaign interaction. Click the campaign, then select a tag. Let’s say tag clicked. All right. Now, let’s add one more condition. And here you can see that the contact click on the link is grayed out. That’s grayed out because we haven’t turned on track links here. So, let’s cancel real quick. Here you see track clicks. Just turn that on and then go back to conditions. Add one more. And you can then select contact clicked on a link. Okay. Now, let’s set a condition. Now, here our link shows up, the google.com link. Okay. And now let’s select another tag. And here we go. Tagal clicked. That’s it. Let’s hit save. And actually, wherever you can just turn on UTM tracking as well. The more you can track the better. And let’s send a test email. And then let’s choose a contact. And let’s review and send. Bulk actions created. Great. And here we go. Here’s the email. Let’s click on this link. Here we are at Google. Perfect. And let’s go back to marketing emails, campaigns, and then statistics. Here you can select the dates when you want to see the results for the last 7 days, 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, or just individually custom dates. Hit confirm. And awesome. Here you can see one has been delivered, one has been opened, and one has been clicked. If you scroll further down, you can again see one email sent open rate 100%. Scroll down more. And here under most recent emails, you can see this campaign one recipient. Let’s click on it. On the right here, you can see the email details. Click on load more statistics. Then you see the summary right here. If you toggle this on, you can show the stats in numbers instead of percentage. You can select click performance and it will show you the URL including the UTM tracking that we’ve turned on before. So, google.com perfectly fine. If you click on the tags right here, then here you can see all of these three tags have been added to that particular contact that has opened the email that has clicked on the email and has also clicked on the URL inside the email. So, here you can click view contacts and it will show you all the contacts that have done this particular action. And that’s it already. This is how you can automate adding tags to specific email campaigns based on the interaction of your subscribers. Now, soon to come is a new feature that you can add the little tag inside the email builder as well. So then you don’t have to go down to settings tags and create a tag outside of the email builder. I hope you like this feature and I will see you in the next video.
